The genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1 and Luke 3)

Both Matthew 1 and Luke 3 contain the genealogies of Jesus.  They are slightly different.  For starters, Luke traces it backwards to Adam and then God whereas Matthew traces it forward from Abraham.  Matthew also emphasizes there were 14 generations between Abraham and David, another 14 between David and the Babylonian exile, and another 14 between the Babylonian captivity and Christ.

Both genealogies trace male ancestors of Joseph, husband of Mary.  However, Joseph was not Christ's biological father, rather the adoptive father.  Christ had no human biological father.  But Joseph took him in as his own son which put Jesus in the ancestral line of David.  The Bible is silent as to whether Mary was descended from David.  Luke 3:23 points out that the people generally thought that Joseph was the father of Jesus, likely up to the point of Jesus' ministry.
