Jesus is questioned (Mark 11:27-33; Matthew 21:23-28; Luke 20:1-8)

The Pharisees ask Jesus by what authority he teaches.  He turns the question around and asks them from where John the Baptist received his authority.  The Pharisees understand that if they say "from heaven", then they should have listened to John the Baptist and embraced Christ.  Likewise, if they said "from men", this would anger the crowd.  So, they say they did not know and Jesus responds that he will not tell them from where he gets his authority.

Most likely, the Pharisees were looking for a way to trap Jesus with the question.  They knew that Jesus preaches he gets his authority from heaven.
