Jesus returns from the transfiguration and finds a crowd is now by the other disciples. We can probably assume that Jesus has returned to his normal color because no one else mentions anything.
The crowd is arguing with the teachers of the law over a boy who has an evil spirit. We later learned that the disciples tried to kick the evil spirit out, but failed to do so. This is probably what prompted the argument with the teachers of the law.
As for the boy, the spirit causes him to be mute. The spirit has already tried to kill him several times and made the boy suicidal.
The father of the child begs Jesus to help if he can. Jesus responds that anything is possible if one believes. The father responds, "I believe, help me overcome my unbelief"
Jesus then kicks the spirit out and explains that this spirit can only be kicked out with prayer and fasting.
Again, we are seeing a discrepancy in the level of strength of demons. This seems to suggest that stronger ones cause people to be mute and/or suicidal. Also, it remains slightly unclear whether the prayer and fasting is directly responsible or indirectly responsible because it raises one's faith up. Further, the story stands as a classic example that it is OK to ask Jesus for more faith ("help me overcome my unbelief").
