Jesus denounces the unrepentant cities (Matthew 11:20-30)

After the discussion regarding John the Baptist, Jesus then denounces the cities in which he had been performing miracles.  His miracles have not prompted the cities as a whole to repentance.

Jesus seems frustrated that the people just want miracles.  Since this story follows John the Baptist, I think it should be read in light of that.  It certainly stands in contrast to the ministry of John the Baptist, which people did go to the desert and specifically ask him what could they do better.

Moreover, this sentiment seems to also echo another message that is emerging.  Specifically, witnessing or performing miracles alone, even in Christ's name, are not by themselves a relationship with Christ.  Rather, they (1) give an indication of the spiritual power and authority of Christ and (2) are a natural byproduct of God's presence on earth.

Back to the story, Jesus then transitions to talking about his unique relationship with the father.  Finally, he asks those who are weak and weary to come to him.

These anecdotes are a great segue to the next story in the chronological reading.
