Jesus continues teaching the people in Jerusalem. Again, this shows that Jesus has completely discarded keeping a low-profile during the Feast of Tabernacles.
It sounds like the crowd to which Jesus speaks is full of Pharisees, Jews, and Jews "who had believed in him".
Jesus makes radical claims. These include:
- "I am the light of the world"
- "I am going away, but you cannot follow me". This confuses the crowd.
- "You are from below. I am from above"
- "You do not know me or my Father"
- "Before Abraham was, I am".
Throughout this dialogue, one can see the crowd bewildered, angered, and even becoming convinced by Jesus. One also wonders when the Pharisees will step in and try to kill him. The statement that he was around before Abraham finally prompts them (the crowd, not Pharisees) to pick up stones to kill Jesus. However, Jesus hid himself and slipped at from the temple grounds.
